Summary |
This article found in Standpoint questions the inevitability of Scottish Independence. Since the last general election, most polls have seen the independence vote favoured by the majority, with a lead of 11% recorded in November of 2020. This can largely be attributed to Brexit, with a significant number of Scotts preferring independence in the EU to a Brexit whilst in Britain. With Boris Johnson unpopular in Scotland, and national support for Nicola Sturgeon, it is clear why Scottish independence is now a greater threat that ever. However, since the writing of this article, Sturgeon has been under fire in the press over potentially breaking ministerial code. Beyond this, the economic case for independence is weaker than before the prior referendum. Does this have the potential to suppress the independence vote? It appears that to champion independence we must work on Britain’s image. A Britain which is attractive to remain in is a global and green one, one which champions the North and thinks beyond London and the South.
